<image:caption>Painting a vase of flowers is almost a rite of passage for many painters. In this version the vase is broken, but the flowers are not. And that’s the point. The beauty of the flowers is not defined by the vase, nor are they diminished by its damage. This thought that came to mind while I was listening to a friend share a painful experience. Understandably, they had lost a sense of objectivity and perspective about themselves and their situation. I felt this deeply, perhaps because at times we have all felt a little broken. <image:caption>This painting is a dip into the world of surrealism. A place where anything and everything is possible. The subject is transfixed by the escape of a butterfly from the seemingly lifeless collection contained within a glass case. While not based on a Biblical account, it is reminiscent of the fact that nothing is impossible or too difficult for the creator of life, Jehovah God as recorded at Luke 18:27 Oil on Board, 55x45cm</image:caption>

The result is that no two people experience anything in exactly the same way. This piece is about keeping an open mind and appreciating that our views are just that, ours. <image:caption>This piece was painted during the elongated lockdown of greater Melbourne, Australia in winter of 2020. In an attempt to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents were unable to leave home without authorised purpose for a period of 14 weeks. The painting aims to capture the desperation of many to escape a growing sense of delirium. The Kanji symbol of “insanity” on the subjects shirt, speaks to the ‘critical’ and ‘hard to deal’ with times we are living in. This painting represents only a small part of the global suffering experienced as a result of the pandemic. For those seeking real hope: A Better World Is Near</image:caption>

While seeming to be present, the subject is staring off into the distance, clearly lost in thought. Just as the the song lyrics suggests “pour your misery down”. The piece is a commentary on the way we sometimes go through life, repeating the same painful experiences. The painting was completed using a limited palette. Its moody and dark, but full of feeling. <image:title>Gallery One - Desert Rose - Desert Rose</image:title>
<image:caption>‘The wilderness and the parched land will exult, And the desert plain will be joyful and blossom with Saffron... At that time the eyes of the blind will be opened, And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. At that time the lame will leap like the dear, And the tongue of the speechless will shout for joy. For waters will burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert plain.’ (Isaiah 1, 5-6) This beautiful passage, taken from the Bible, is the inspiration behind this painting. The promise of transformation back to the creator’s original purpose, is likened to the desert blooming with health and beauty. Aside from the obvious environmental damage that has overtaken much of the middle east which was once known for its lush forests and fertile savannah’s, the Prophet Isaiah was speaking of the figurative desert that is humanities lack of appreciation for spiritual things. The fulfilment of this promise offers real hope to those who are weighed down by the problems we encounter. For more about this read: Real Hope for Tomorrow</image:caption>

That doesn’t make the person defective, but rather someone that experiences the ups and downs of life with a greater depth of feeling than most. This piece is about accepting our whole self, not just the parts that are validated by others. And realising, that those darker, hidden parts are just as worthy. Perhaps there is no greater challenge or demonstration of inner strength, than to resist the fire of emotion that entices us to act or respond in the moment. <image:title>Gallery One - Tenderness - Tenderness</image:title>
<image:caption>This painting dips in the world of the surreal, to draw the viewers attention to the power of tenderness. Although clearly a play on the weird and wonderful concept of metaphysics, it contrasts the brutality of the hunt with the gentle, warmth of the child who draws out one of the hounds in a moment of ‘tenderness’. All too little experienced for many in this world, is the feeling of safety and care. The weight of expectation, the stab of insult and the lack of genuine kindness is the hidden sadness that many experience. The painting offers a moment of perspective. It brings back to mind a Biblical scripture that describes the way we should treat one another Romans 12:10 . For some it may seem like idealism, but imagine what life would be like in a world where each of us applied this? A Better World is Near Oil on Canvas, 40x55cm</image:caption>

<image:caption>“My heart wants roots. My mind wants wings. I cannot bear their bickering’s.” (E.Y. Harburg) This piece is about the seemingly irreconcilable need to have freedom, whilst also wanting a home (a secure sense of permanency). The young woman is standing in the corner of the room, next to the window which gives the viewer a sense of the vast world outside, a place for exploration. On the other side, is a wall covered in wallpaper, alluding to the furnished comforts of a home. The painting does not aim to judge either point of view, but rather, seeks the viewer to ponder their own internal battles and opposing desires. What is your paradox? This one is about sharing the gifts of growth with others. For me the gifts have been many, but most notably a change in my thinking and personality as I’ve learned a better way. As an artist, I’m drawn to understanding different perspectives, but often I’ve struggled to truly examine my own. As a student of the Bible, I continue to try to develop what is described as the fruitage of the sprit… Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faith, Mildness and Self-control. I’m no where near any of these things, but I’ll share what I have with others because this world needs more of these things. Galatians 5:22-23 Oil on stretched canvas, 50cm Diameter</image:caption>

The painting is a satirical look at our often-futile attempts to be successful and independent women (or men) in world in love with the fantasy of having it all. <image:caption>This piece is close to my heart. In an increasingly homogeneous world, there is nothing more refreshing than someone who is completely them-self, distinct from the pack. So it seems ironic that many of us only find our true self, after exploring the lives of others. It may be through pop culture or someone we admire that we try on different ‘lives’ to see what ‘fits’ and we discard what doesn’t. Or perhaps, someone teaches us something about ourselves that we’d never considered. In any case, it seems we are designed to need connection with others, to be fully connected with our self. This piece is about that, the search for authenticity. (RL) Oil on Board, 40x30cm</image:caption>

It’s a peaceful evening under the moon, feeling small yet full of potential. It’s deep, raw, honest conversations with trusted friends. It’s harmony, love and laughter in my family. It’s discovering new music and faraway places. It’s expressing my messiest feelings in prayer, knowing I will be understood. It’s the awe I feel watching the sun rise (or set). It’s the spark of a new idea and rush of inspiration. It’s a true connection where silence isn’t awkward, and time apart doesn’t change anything. And in all of this, it’s balance, accepting everything has its time and its place. (RL) Oil on Board, 55x45cm</image:caption>

Her eyes convey the tension that often exists within us, between wanting to express an emotion and at the same time wanting to suppress it. This painting is in memory of my firstborn, Elsa. I remember thinking that I wanted the world to stop and time to pause. That every movement forward, felt like a movement away. I felt guilty the first time I smiled after losing her, as though I was disrespecting her in some way. I had become a person of faith, but I felt anything but faithful. Looking back, I feared healing, because I thought I might slowly forget her. (R.L.) I haven’t and I won.t forget her. But even if I should, I am secure in the knowledge that one greater than me remembers her - Isaiah 49:15 For anyone who is experiencing grief, I’m sorry. <image:caption>“Do you ever drive somewhere, just to sit in your car and listen to music? I guess it’s the feeling of being unwatched, un-judged and un-obligated. I’ve come to realise that in order to care, I need to take some time not to care. So I’ll stay here a while and let the difficult things fade with the light.” (a small extract of dialogue from a writing project’) The painting was completed using a tetradic colour scheme to enhance a sense of balance and atmosphere. The title ‘saoirse’ is an Irish word meaning ‘freedom’. Oil on Board, 40x30cm</image:caption>

<image:caption>This painting was inspired by William Shakespear’s Quote: 'The robbed that smiles, steals something from the thief’. The painting is a playful look at how one’s attitude to unfavorable situations can often transform the outcome. By remaining unshakable in our sense of hope and joy, we can turn a loss into a win. The title relates to the parrot stealing the subject’s olive from her ‘dirty’ martini, which of course is always stirred, not shaken. Oil on Board, 40x30cm</image:caption>

<image:caption>A reflective piece about the power and impact of emotions. So potent are some moments that they can linger for some time afterwards, becoming a figurative afterglow. The painting was completed using gradations of the primary colours, with the addition of white. The positioning of the subject is intended to pull the viewer into the scene, as part of the moment. What is the story behind this? Ultimately that is for the viewer to decide. The title was taken from the song ‘Summertime Sadness’ released by Lana Del Rey in 2012. Then I ask myself the same question.’ The subject stares at the birds outside her apartment, considering her own future. She knows what she wants, but yet senses her own stagnation, a kind of situational paralysis, caused by fear. This painting is ultimately about dealing with frustration, the top layer of the feeling. (Hannah Brencher) This piece is painted with high intensity of colour and dark hues. It’s meant to be bold, while the subject matter contains more gentle elements. The contrast is intentional and aims to highlight that holding space for someone to have both their lighter and darker sides is part of what it means to accept someone. My goals today are simple, keep a clam heart, learn something new and share some hope with someone who’s lost theirs.” A note to self, after a night of little sleep. Painted in peacock colours and with a 1940’s feel, this piece is about the decisions on how we will show up when life presents us with challenges. It’s not referring to the big, life changing tragedies, but rather, the day-to-day difficulties that have us operating at less than our best. It’s the choices we make at these times, that define the kind of person we are, and how we will impact others for better or worse. RL Oil on Canvas, 40x55cm</image:caption>

My skin tingled as the wind swept through the grassy field, like a thousand whispering voices. I’d driven out of chaos, fueled by a tenacious hope. I wasn’t sure where I was going, but it felt like freedom.’ (RL) Oil on Board, 40x50cm</image:caption>

It challenges us to reconsider how we view reality and to consider the potential of our mind and the how we can contribute and shape our own future. ‘The future has several names. <image:caption>This painting was inspired by a personal journal that reflected on thoughts that are sometimes are conflicting and highlight that two things can be true at the same time. The sky and city scape is painted at the beginning of dusk, when the colours become unreal and both day and night seem to co-exist. 'So here I am, somewhere between the problems of the world below and the solutions above. Sipping my tea, wondering what it might be like to live a different life, while trying to be grateful for the one I have. Recognising time passes too quickly and yet being impatient for things still to come. Feeling like an emotional tornado, while remaining calmy grounded. Seeking perfection, but falling in love with failure. Knowing that’s where potential exists.’ (RL) Oil on Stretched Canvas', 40x50cm</image:caption>
